O'Neil tried out for the third season of Canadian Idol in the early months of 2005 while still in high school. She was able to make it into the top tier of contestants when judges applauded her vocal ability. O'Neil was praised highly from jury. But she was a victim of major defeats in the Top 10 week as well as the Top 9 week of the finals. Her score was within the bottom three and then in the bottom two. The judges were stunned by this and advised the audience to choose contestants similar to Melissa with the best singing abilities. In spite of consistently impressive performances throughout the contest, O'Neil never again finished within the top three. She was the judge. Werner predicted, after two other breathtaking performances, that O'Neil would be the winner in the Canadian Idol competition, as she would be the first woman and the youngest contestant in history after the 7th September Finals of 2005. O'Neil immediately received a call from Canadian prime minister Paul Martin to congratulate her on winning Canadian Idol.
